Thomas Van Stein teaches the core principles of light and shadow in plein air painting. Students will work with oils, acrylics, and watercolors to understand how to capture light and color relationships on a two-dimensional surface. The class begins with Plein Air Fundamentals, where students complete up to four timed 6 x 8 inch sketches over three hours to strengthen their observational accuracy and responsiveness to changing outdoor conditions.

Saturday, scheduled from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. to allow painting through sunset into early evening light, ideal for introducing nocturne methods.

Monday is a guided studio session, open to artists of all levels, with Thomas Van Stein’s instructor demonstration, Q&A and professional & supportive artwork review sessions.  Additional demonstration topics include how to mix paint using a palette knife versus a brush, expressive brushwork and palette knife techniques to develop surface texture, when and how to scrape a painting, and finishing techniques such as scraping for simplification and glazing for enhancement.

Students who participated in the weekend workshop are invited to join and continue building on the learning from the March 28 and March 29 sessions. The class is also open to other experienced and advanced painters who wish to deepen their plein air practice.
